Working From Home - Hybrid-Living

Hybrid Living - using our homes as our working environment. With today’s modern technology we are no longer tied to the office and this gives us the opportunity to work whenever and from wherever we like- from home, a café or even the beach!

With around 4 million people in the UK now working from home and an estimated 1.8 million people who would like to work from home given the chance, the home could well be considered the new office.

Our homes therefore need to adapt to being dual-purpose - places to both live comfortably and work efficiently.

This trend is being driven by many younger people coming into the job market who see flexibility as essential and expect to spend at least part of their work hours working from home.

With homeowners now using their kitchens, not only to cook, socialise and relax but to work, multi-functional space issues and emerging smart technologies are now impacting how kitchens are planned and which products are purchased.

Some 40% of people currently planning a new kitchen want planned space to accommodate working at home or for homework and hidden socket outlets are top must-haves for a laptop

Key Findings

  • Kitchens need to be planned as a multi-functioned space allowing us to cook, work, socialise and adapt to provide enough space to entertain. This needs to be taken into consideration at the initial planning and design stages.
  • Smart technology can be incorporated into the kitchen to help create dual-purpose environment suitable for cooking and working. Read our article on smart home technology
  • Making the best use of storage and work surfaces is more important than ever as lack of space continues to be the main issue with new kitchens. The lack of space is exaggerated when trying to use it for two or more main functions (such as cooking and working). However, there are many be opportunities to add an extension or create an open plan space.
