What needs to be considered

1. Do the works require Planning Permission or are you in a conservation area that needs special consideration or are the works allowed under permitted development.
2. Building Regulation approval (all structural works need to be designed and calculated so that they are safe and comply with Building Regulations).
3. What is the best design/layout to suit your needs and the style of your house.
4. What is your budget, what is it going to cost and how will you fund it.
5. Will you need an agreement with your neighbour before work starts under The Party Wall etc Act 1996.
6. How will you choose the right builder for the job.

A small architectural project may be provided by an Architectural Technologist or a Building Surveyor as they both have the necessary training. In the first instance answering the above questions will help you make the right decision.
